The next film in Talkies' 2017 HERE Film Festival was made by a local director, Bruce Goodison, who will be at the screening at the Fox on 5th April to introduce and answer questions.  Leave to Remain, Bruce's first feature film,  was selected for the London Film Festival and has won seven awards around the globe. Omar, a charismatic Afghan teenager, is at the precarious juncture of having his refugee status decided, when the arrival of a boy from back home threatens to change.......

Talkies Community Cinema has never been known to rest on its laurels.  This month the locally based "pop-up" cinema will be launching its third HERE film festival with a special event featuring for the first time a live orchestra.  The film in question is of great historical importance and was itself a groundbreaking achievement when it was first shown just over a hundred years ago. Talkies' screening of The Battle of the Somme on 22nd March at Heartlands High School will form part.......

Ousmane Sembène, the father of African cinema, is one of the key directors of the 20th century and yet his works - still relevant today - remain unknown to many.  The Sembène season at the Bernie Grant Centre will help plug this gap in public knowledge. Sembène, born in Senegal in 1923, was both a film director and a writer, whose novels were written in French.  His directorial career ran from 1963 until 2004 and his final film addressed the subject of female genital.......

David Hinitt improvising accompaniment to Metropolis at Christ Church in 2015 Following on from the roaring success in 2014 and 2015 of silent films at Christ Church Southgate set to live organ music, this year Talkies Community Cinema brings you silent comedy from one of the all time greats – Buster Keaton – with live organ music from Christ Church’s very own David Hinitt and Adam Dickson. For the fourth event in this year's Here Suburban Film Festival Talkies Community Cinema is setting up its screen at Chickenshed.  If the first Here night celebrated a "boy from suburbia" (David Bowie), on Saturday 16th April it will be the turn of a famous girl from a bit of suburbia that's even closer to home. The star with soul Amy is an Oscar-winning documentary about Southgate girl Amy Winehouse made by another north Londoner, Asif Kapadia.  It's an insightful and moving.......

An award-winning romantic comedy, in which more than half of the footage was filmed in and around Palmers Green, is now available to view online. Dead Cat, released in 2013 and a winner of awards in the UK, USA and Cyprus, was written by two local lads, Sam Bern (Sam Bourke) and Stefan Georgiou.  Stefan directed the film, in which Sam plays a character called "Sam".  Sam started his education at Hazelwood School and then went to Ashmole, where he met Stefan.  They have been.......

Talkies is a not-for-profit, volunteer-led society which gets no regular funding or subsidy. Through the generous support of Friends of Talkies, together with other fund-raising and ticket sales, in 2015 we were able to: commission young film makers to create short films based in our area; run HERE FILM FESTIVAL, which showcases local talent; buy good quality equipment to improve your cinema experience; establish two new local groups - one in Bowes Park/Bounds Green and another in Bush.......
