St Harmonica's Blues Club: The Blues Spiders + Laura Holland

The Southgate Club, 17 Chase Side, N14 5BP (Entrance is in Crown Lane)

In the early 1970’s the area around Southend and Canvey Island became known as the Thames Delta with bands led by  octor Feelgood and the Kursall Flyers taking the London Pub Rock scene, and later the World, by storm. Well, the scene is still very much alive and kicking in that part of Essex and these days the Blues Spiders have been very much at the forefront of what is going on. We’re delighted to have them once more at St Harmonicas for the first time at the Southgate Club venue and we know that you are going to love what they do. The Blues Spiders have built on their area’s R’n’B heritage and rather than serving up the same old offering of blues covers they draw on Chicago blues and swing to play their own compositions with a side offering of southern slide plus a few classics thrown in. The line up has some serious blues pedigree with Mitch Greaves (harp and vocals), Russ Cottee (guitars and vocals) and magnificent rhythm section of Paul Henshaw on the double bass and Bob Clouter on drums.

The band have played all over at major festivals and venues including a five year stint at Ain’t Nothing But; they featured on Paul Jones Radio 2 show back in 2017 and have 3 acclaimed albums to their credit:

Don’t miss this last hurrah gig at St Harmonica’s this Friday.

Half time comes in the form of Laura Holland. A few years ago Laura was one of the rising starts of UK Blues featuring on the cover of Blues in Britain magazine. After a spell out she is back with guitarist Antonin Vanneyre and we are thrilled to see her performing again and back at St Harmonica’s.

What a great night in prospect, see you there.

Walthamstow Blues Bash Saturday 22nd February

Four Bands including The Odyssey Blues & Soul Band featuring Malcolm Hine for just £12 with £6 of that going to the charity CALM, the Campaign Against Living Miserably. From 8.00pm at Walthamstow Trades Hall, 61-63 Tower Hamlets Road E17 4RQ. Tickets from

St Harmonica's at the Southgate Club

St Harmonica's will be at the Southgate Club on Fridays - apart from the first Friday of the month. Instead of the first Friday of the month, St Harmonica's will be at the Southgate Club on the Sunday after the first Friday (which in some months will be the second Sunday of the month).

Purchase an annual membership card for just £5 (cheapest membership anywhere?) and thereafter admission is free on Friday blues nights and Sunday blues jams. As we’ve always done, we will take ‘the hat’ around for donations, which is how the bands get paid. The Southgate Club will take the bar takings, which is how they are able to give us the venue at no cost.

So you know where your membership fee goes, we’ve had to buy some new PA equipment this year and get a mixer repaired, which cost us over £1k, and we need a reserve to top up the bands’ fees when the evening’s hat doesn’t quite make it.

Doors open at 8.00pm, the entrance is at the back in Crown Lane, and 2019 membership cards will be available on the door. Parking is fine after 6.30 in local streets and there is always 3 hour free parking in the Asda car park, public transport is a doddle!
