Bruce Castle Museum, Lordship Lane, N17 8NU

The Bruce Castle Museum unveils “ANIMATOGRAPH! How cinema was born in Haringey”, an historical exhibition that traces the life and work of Robert W. Paul (1869-1943), the English scientist and film pioneer who changed cinema history from his innovative studio located in Muswell Hill.

About Robert W Paul

Born in Highbury, R. W. Paul was the first English film exhibitor, supplier and producer, but his life story is still scarcely known.  Curated by noted film scholar Ian Christie, ANIMATOGRAPH! tells the story of the electrician and scientific instrument maker who, on the day that the Lumière brothers showed their first moving pictures in London (1896), was exhibiting his own revolutionary filming projector, the Theatrograph, soon renamed Animatograph.

Through rarely seen images and an educational timeline, ANIMATOGRAPH! shows how Paul unexpectedly became a filmmaker, the inventors and artists who made film possible, and how Britain’s innovators shaped early cinema.

About Ian Christie

Ian Christie (FBA) is a British film scholar, curator, and broadcaster who has published extensively on the history of cinema. He has been the Anniversary Professor of Film and Media History at Birkbeck, University of London since 1999. He is also a regular contributor to home video commentaries, radio and television programmes, and documentaries.

The exhibition is free and open to the public from 05 April – 28 July 2019, running every week from Wednesday to Sunday, 1pm to 5pm.
