Hornsey Historical Society: 1066 and all that – the Bayeux Tapestry

Crouch End Union Church & Community Centre, Weston Park, N8 9PX

bayeux tapestry

We all know that the Bayeux tapestry (which is not actually a tapestry at all) tells us about the Battle of Hastings, doesn’t it? Actually, the tapestry tells us far more. Generally regarded as one of the greatest works of art, if not the greatest, of the early medieval period, it gives deep insights into everyday life of the period.

In his talk, Mike Brown will look at what the tapestry actually is, who made it, how, when, and most interestingly, why. He looks at the dozen named people, the unanswered questions, how did Harold die, who was Aelfgifu, and what was she doing with the monk, and modern discoveries, such as the throwing mace.

A truly great artwork, a marvellous source of historical evidence, and a perfect example of self aggrandisement, propaganda, and hidden meanings, the Bayeux tapestry is a perfect example of how familiarity breeds contempt. Hopefully the talk will re-kindle appreciation of this 950-year-old treasure.

Doors open at 7.30pm for the sale of refreshments and publications and close at 8pm. The main doors have to be closed at that time for security reasons, so anyone arriving after then will be unable to gain access.

A donation of £2 is requested from non-members.
