London Living Streets/Urban Design Group: Low Traffic Neighbourhoods

Public meeting organised by London Living Streets and the Urban Design Group

The idea of low traffic neighbourhoods is coming to the fore in answer to the concerns over the pervasive impact of vehicles, including when drivers take short cuts through residential areas – the danger of death and injury, parents fearful of letting their children walk or cycle to school, the impaired health of residents from air pollution, disturbed sleep from noise and vibration, and the general “uglification” of streets with pavement space, trees, and verges sacrificed to make way for additional carriageway width and parking.

Two new booklets available at the meeting

Living Streets and London Cycling Campaign have co-published two superb booklets which will be available at this meeting:

  • Low Traffic Neighbourhoods – An Introduction for Policy Makers
  • A Guide to Low Traffic Neighbourhoods – the detail

The booklets make clear: What a Low Traffic Neighbourhood is. What measures a local council can take to introduce one. What they cost and why they do not have to be expensive. How community support can be built.  What we can learn from existing low traffic neighbourhoods.

  • Feryal Clark, Deputy Mayor of Hackney, and Cabinet Member for Health, Social Care, Transport and Parks – Hackney’s experience in with measures to make a practical difference on the streets
  • Rachel Aldred, Reader in Transport, University of Westminster, The evidence base for Low Traffic Neighbourhoods
  • Fran Graham, London Cycling Campaign, Measures to  take; Myths to dispel
  • The Dulwich Experiment – Safer Routes to School
