North London Humanists: Towards a secular education system

Ruth Winston Community Centre, 190 Green Lanes, N13 5UE

north london humanist group

Talk & Discussion:

“TOWARDS A SECULAR EDUCATION SYSTEM — - NO MORE FAITH SCHOOLS!”

ALASTAIR LICHTEN

From faith schools to coercive worship, and from confessional RE to faith based sex education, our school system is full of inappropriate religious influence, privilege and discrimination. But it doesn’t need to be this way; our many fantastic community schools show how we can move towards a secular, inclusive education system. Alastair Lichten, The National Secular Society’s head of education, will talk about the range of the Society’s campaigning, policy and advice work on education, including their No More Faith Schools campaign.

The NSS (to whom we are affiliated) is a non-profit organisation which campaigns for the separation of religion and state and equal respect for everyone’s human rights, so no one is either advantaged or disadvantaged because of their beliefs. Alastair joined the NSS in 2014 to work on a variety of their campaigns before focusing on education.
