Signs + Wonders: An exhibition by Patrick Samuel

Dugdale Centre, Enfield Town, EN2 6DS

201911 signs and wonders

With his latest exhibition, Patrick Samuel explores the mystical and fantastic, the inexplicable and unknowable in a world that has felt alien to him his whole life. Since he was a boy, and nurtured by his late father, Patrick had an interest in the symbolism of ancient and medieval cultures, something he passionately expresses in his art time and again. His Catholic upbringing on the Caribbean island of Trinidad contributed to him delving into the hidden layers between worlds. In his own words:

“I’ve always felt that there are more mysteries than truths in this world; there are a few things we know, much more we don’t know and probably even more we can’t know. Even my Philosophy degree didn’t make me run out of awe and wonder at a world that is as mysterious now as it ever has been…

For this exhibition, you’ll see me expressing my ideas, dreams and longings in ways that are different from any of my previous work. Whereas you might be familiar with my landscapes, portraits and dreamscapes, here you’ll see me exploring cubism and the abstract in more tribal settings and raw colours.

Signs+Wonders will bring us face to face with a world we’re on the brink of forgetting. It’s the mystery and wonder of what things mean and how those before us used them. It will be evoking a sense of trying to reconnect to our most visceral yearnings as a species as we stand on the threshold of change.”

About the artist

Patrick Samuel is an artist, musician and public speaker with autism and ADHD. Having returned to art after a 20-year break, he picked up painting and drawing again when he started his daily art therapy in December 2016. A time of prolific work as well as recognition followed, and Patrick has embraced his neurodiversity as a gift rather than seeing it as a disability.

Patrick has produced an extensive portfolio in a wide range of styles and media. His work and his story have been featured in magazines as well as on BBC Breakfast and BBC News online.

Patrick has produced two albums with “neuro-diverse” music he wrote and has now been signed to Tiergarten Records to release his second album, Distant Star.

As a spokesperson for autism awareness, he has been sharing his experiences at various events and conferences throughout the UK.
