St Harmonica's Blues Club: Fran McGillivray Band + Dave Rich

The Southgate Club, 17 Chase Side, N14 5BP (Entrance is in Crown Lane)

201906 fran mcgillivray 1

This Friday we are absolutely delighted to welcome the Fran McGillivray Band back to St Harmonica’s. They have played on more than one occasion at our previous venue as well as for us on the Woodland Blues Stage at Livestock; they are just sublime.

Fran McGillivray, vocals, bass guitar, Mike Burke, acoustic, electric & resonator guitars, mandola, mandolin & vocals, and Roger Nunn, percussion, comprise an exciting and compelling band with a strong following on the blues and roots music scene. Former founder members of the legendary Urban Blues outfit, So Long Angel, Fran and Mike have spent many years honing their craft and have developed a unique take on roots music and an amazing empathy on stage. They have performed at many major festivals in Europe and the UK including Rotterdam, Cambridge and Shrewsbury. They have shared the bill with artists such as Bob Dylan, Bert Jansch, John Renbourne and Elvis Costello. They are regulars on the club and concert circuit, and on BBC and local music radio shows. Fran and Mike’s own vibrant and original songs are complemented by soulful, dynamic and powerful interpretations of songs from a broad range of genres from Americana through to Country and Blues. Fran & Mike have recorded four CDs under their own names, the latest is entitled “Midnight Call”.

The Fran McGillivray Band has been widely acclaimed by reviewers across the Blues and Roots scene; just look at some of the reviews:

"Splendid! wonderful voice and tasty guitar" Paul Jones Radio 2

"Mighty good!" Maverick

“A new twist on old music”. Rock 'n' Reel

“Beautifully delivered, a thoroughly enjoyable set” Blues Matters
“Very impressive” Robin Denslow, The Guardian

“Fran at times sounds like a mix of Rory Block and Bonnie Raitt”. Blues in Britain

Check out their website www.franmike.com  and we’ll see you on Friday evening, early if you want a seat!

Halftime comes in the form of Dave Rich who jammed with us at the last Blues Jam and who will be performing solo at the club for the first time.

St Harmonica's at the Southgate Club

St Harmonica's will be at the Southgate Club on Fridays - apart from the first Friday of the month. Instead of the first Friday of the month, St Harmonica's will be at the Southgate Club on the Sunday after the first Friday (which in some months will be the second Sunday of the month).

We’ve spent a bit of time up at the new venue and we hope that you will all like the place and feel at home straight away. To allay one or two concerns that came our way; there is loads of seating, around 120 seats around tables with good sightlines and acoustics, and there is a very well stocked bar with pumped beer, a few varieties, available in the members bar which St Harmonica’s members will be able to use on blues nights.

We are able to keep the conditions the same: purchase an annual membership card for just £5 (cheapest membership anywhere?) and thereafter admission is free on Friday blues nights and Sunday blues jams. As we’ve always done, we will take ‘the hat’ around for donations, which is how the bands get paid. The Southgate Club will take the bar takings, which is how they are able to give us the venue at no cost. We’re delighted to be able to keep St Harmonica’s as a community club and hope to bring you the best in blues throughout 2019 and into the next decade.

So you know where your membership fee goes, we’ve had to buy some new PA equipment this year and get a mixer repaired, which cost us over £1k, and we need a reserve to top up the bands’ fees when the evening’s hat doesn’t quite make it.

Doors open at 8.00pm, the entrance is at the back in Crown Lane, and 2019 membership cards will be available on the door. Parking is fine after 6.30 in local streets and there is always 3 hour free parking in the Asda car park, public transport is a doddle!

Coming up in the next few weeks
