St Harmonica's Blues Club: Saints & Sinners + Steve Cook
The Southgate Club, 17 Chase Side, N14 5BP (Entrance is in Crown Lane)
Blues and gospel, despite their obvious differences, have always been linked, perhaps different branches from the same tree; one developing on Saturday night, the other on Sunday morning. So many blues musicians we know and love spent their early years singing in church. We would never have had the presence, power and passion of Son House, Muddy Waters or Ma Rainy “mother of the blues” without these foundations. And of course, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, "the original soul sister" and "the godmother of rock and roll”, who throughout her career could handle both sides with flair, influencing music far beyond gospel and blues.
Inspired by all these rich influences, Ben Tyzack, Constance Redgrave & Maurice McElroy from the Spikedrivers with Fran McGillivray and Mike Burke present Saints & Sinners, a concert exploring the space and harmony between spiritual music and ‘the devil’s blues’.
Five voices, a multitude of guitars, unusual percussion & even some homemade instruments create a world of soul, stories and soundscapes; a foot-stomping, gut-wrenching, heart-soaring journey from the cross to the crossroads….and all points in-between.
Half time comes in the form of Steve Cook delivering his trademark swamp blues/rock.
Join us early for good seats, It will be busy. Doors from 8.00pm
