We would like to invite you to Bernie Grant Arts Centre’s Windrush Festival - our first ever festival highlighting the vital contribution the Windrush Generation and their descendants have made to the cultural landscape of the UK. 

Windrush Festival will be a two-week long programme of artistic activity with a packed calendar of performance, literature, music, cinema, workshops, food, talks, debates and much more. Details of the events are included below, with more to be announced!

We’ll be celebrating Windrush Day on - Saturday 22 June - with a packed programme of FREE music, dance, talks, and workshops.

The BGAC Windrush Festival will be a unique moment of reflection and celebration, we can't wait to see you there!

Windrush and Me: Rt. Hon David Lammy In Conversation

13 June, 7:30pm

MP for Tottenham since 2000, Rt. Hon David Lammy has been at the heart of the campaign for justice for those wrongly deported and detained as a result of the Windrush scandal. Join us for this very special in-conversation as he talks politics, activism and why a hostile environment affects us all.

Released three years after Windrush arrived in Tilsbury Docks, film legend Earl Cameron broke through the colour bar landing a lead role in the gritty melodrama heist movie Pool of London. Playing a shy, sensitive outsider to his cocky shipmate, Earl Cameron’s character Danny gets unwittingly involved in a diamond heist gone wrong.



Memories of Mind: Women of the Windrush tell their stories

14 June, 7:30pm

Award winning composer Shirley J Thompson OBE and guest artists bring compelling narratives and memories of from the Windrush experience to life. Featuring: Queen of Lover’s Rock, Carroll Thompson, poet Zena Edwards and others.



Reggaeoke **LIVE**

15 June, 8:00pm

Reggaeoke bringing their unique mix of Reggae, Bashment, Dancehall and Soca Karaoke with the LIVE BAND to north London for the first time ever. A night jam-packed with high-energy, laughter and lots of fun from start ’til it done.




15 & 21 June, 7:00pm

Combining dramatisation of key moments in Reggae history, fresh interviews and archive footage, the full story of this iconic record label is revealed. The journey of Trojan Records goes from Duke Reid to Double Barrel, encompassing Roots Reggae, Rude Boys, Sound System culture, Ska and Rock Steady.



New Daughter’s of Africa

21 June, 7:30pm

New Daughter’s of Africa – Margaret Busby’s major new global anthology of writing by over 200 women of African descent, comes to the Bernie Grant Arts Centre with an evening of literature, poetry and prose by women of Caribbean heritage, including Andrea Stuart, Dorothea Smartt and Zadie Smith.



Windrush on the Square

22 June, 12:30 - 5:30pm

Join us for a very special Windrush day with a packed programme of FREE music, dance, talks, and workshops and much more as the Bernie Grant Art Centre celebrates the vital contribution the Windrush generation and their descendants have made to the UK.  Includes a workshop with dance legend Namron OBE, workshops by Island Girls Rock, Black Book Swap and performances by Arts Bridge and the award winning Steppaz.



National Theatre LIVE – Small Island

27 June, 7:00pm

Andrea Levy’s Orange Prize-winning novel Small Island comes to life in an epic new theatre adaptation, filmed live on stage and screened here at BGAC. Small Island embarks on a journey from Jamaica to Britain, through the Second World War to 1948 – the year the HMT Empire Windrush docked at Tilbury.
