Two of the jewels in the crown of Broomfield Park, the Greenery café and the Conservatory, were broken in to on the night of 17/18 February. Both of these are run on a non-profit making basis by teams of volunteers.

A tree trunk seat was thrown through one window and another window was broken, probably as an easier exit route. The tree trunk was thrown through with enough force to break the metal security bars on the inside of the window. The trunk can be seen on top of the cooker in the second photograph.

Damage to the Conservatory was less, but a broken window and its frame will now need to be replaced.

Neither of these groups keep money in their buildings overnight.

Needless to say, should anyone know anything about these incidents, the police will want to know. Otherwise the best thing that anyone can do is to support these two voluntary groups which can be contacted via www.friendsofbroomfieldpark.org.

“Vandals may have broken our windows, but they have not broken our spirit.”

Beautiful. I think Sarah speaks for us all there. It brought back memories – and a lump in the throat – to the last great Battle for Broomfield when those of us there were roused with those immortal words:

We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in the Broomfield,
we shall fight on the pond and lakes,
we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength, we shall defend our park, whatever the cost may be,
we shall fight on the benches,
we shall fight on the play ground,
we shall fight in the fields and on the paths,
we shall fight on the slightly hilly bits;
we shall never surrender, and even if, which I do not for a moment believe, this park or a large part of it were park-keeper and investment-light and so decaying, then our hinterland, keen and kitted, would carry on the struggle, until, in good time, a New World, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation to the old ways.”
