Only a few months ago, Noah's Ark was celebrating the opening of its children's hospice in Barnet, built thanks to a huge fundraising campaign. Now they are faced with a £2m deficit, which potentially threatens their survival. Below, Peter Capaldi explains:

In a similar position is Haven House, another children's hospice that cares for children and families from Enfield and elsewhere in a historic building tucked away in part of Epping Forest. Watch this video about their wonderful work.

The Helen Rollason Cancer Charity supports patients attending several hospitals, including the North Middlesex. Again, a large chunk of its income comes from fundraising events and the charity's shops. Read more.


Enfield Veg Co, based at Forty Hall Farm, delivers weekly bags of fresh, organic veg to households all over Enfield and East Barnet. The Covid-19 emergency means that some of its usual dropoff points, such as Baskervilles in Palmers Green, are unavailable, but it is setting up temporary replacements located nearby. They are currently taking on new members on a first come, first served basis and are accepting up to 10 new members per week. Read more.


Enfield Health & Wellbeing Centre have suspended all their normal activities and are instead offering a 24-hour telephone befriending service to people aged 60 and above who live alone or need someone to talk to. Read more.


Social distancing and self-isolation are not incompatible with writing. Shakespeare himself is rumoured to have written King Lear while quarantined. It can be helpful to write in challenging times and to be part of a friendly group, focusing on your writing.
