Residents of streets to the south of Bowes Road, particularly those living in Brownlow Road, Warwick Road and nearby streets, have come together to launch a campaign to prevent traffic in the area building up to the unacceptably high levels that were normal prior to the Covid-19 lockdown. Their proposal is to create a low-traffic neighbourhood to prevent use of roads in the area as a cut-through. The campaign, under the slogan 'A Bus Gate for Brownlow?', has won the support of Better Streets for Enfield, who promote the idea of creating people-friendly streets across the entire borough.

The government has told local authorities that it expects them to take urgent measures to reallocate roadspace away from cars to provide more room for walking and cycling 'as swiftly as possible, and in any event within weeks'. They are to include 'pop-up' cycle lanes with light segregation features, more school streets, lower speed limits, pedestrian and cycle zones that exclude motor traffic, low-traffic residential neighbourhoods, and bus and cycle corridors along key routes into town and city centres. Enfield Council's 'Streetspace Plan', announced last week, will incorporate measures of this sort - residents are able to upload their own suggestions on the council's Consultation Hub.

Transport for London's Streetspace Programme, announced on Wednesday, is intended to rapidly transform the capital's streets to accommodate a possible ten-fold increase in cycling and five-fold increase in walking when lockdown restrictions are eased. Many boroughs have already started on their own similar schemes - Enfield's was announced on Tuesday. Measures of this kind have already been endorsed by the prime minister and business secretary.

'We don't want or need to go back to those fume-filled, congested and hostile roads of the past' - the message concluding a letter sent by campaigners to the leaders of Enfield Council concerned about what might happen once the coronavirus lockdown ends. They urge the leaders to to take steps to ensure that, as restrictions are gradually relaxed, high levels of car usage do not return, hindering social distancing and discouraging active travel modes - walking and cycling. Their suggestions include 'pop-up' cycle lanes along corridors for key workers, widening of pinchpoints that present hazards when walking or cycling, and re-allocation of road space at places where queues outside shops make it impossible for pedestrians to maintain safe distances.

After assessing feedback received during the six month-long consultation period, Enfield Council is consulting on some minor modifications to the experimental traffic orders relating to parking and loading restrictions along the A105 adjacent to the cycle lanes. The modifications would provide additional parking and loading points in Green Lanes, Winchmore Hill, and in Village Road, Enfield.

While it is relatively straightforward to declare an emergency, it is far more challenging to commit to specific interventions that will deliver big cuts in carbon emissions. The London Living Streets group has identified a range of key policies that local authorities can adopt right now to reduce carbon emissions. All have either been adopted by another major global city, by local authorities in London or elsewhere in the UK.

Walking and Cycling Grants London is a programme which supports London's diverse communities to walk and cycle more often and more safely. The programme, funded by Transport for London and administered by Groundwork London, offers grants to projects of up to £10,000 over a three year period.

The most comprehensive study of bicycle and road safety to date finds that building safe facilities for cyclists is one of the biggest factors in road safety for everyone. Bicycling infrastructure -- specifically, separated and protected bike lanes -- leads to fewer fatalities and better road-safety outcomes for all road users.

RoadPeace, the national charity for road crash victims, has today published a review looking at traffic law enforcement across London. Based on the latest statistics from 2017, the findings have led the charity to call for improved transparency and accountability of the Metropolitan Police, to understand the strategy it is deploying to tackle road danger. London should be leading the way when it comes to traffic law enforcement, and RoadPeace’s review indicates that enforcement is not only inconsistent and infrequent across the capital, but doesn’t compare well nationally either.

The First and Last Mile - the Dynamic of Everyday Journeys is based on research into how 850 regular commuters are able to incorporate active travel into their journeys to and from work. It focuses on the benefits that might be secured if people switched from car travel to public transport and used more active travel modes for the journey to and from the railway station or bus stop - making the most of the 'first and last' mile of their daily journey.

In the run up to the council elections on 3rd May two organisations that campaign for a fresh approach to London's streets have come together to set out a challenge for party leaders in each of London's 32 boroughs. London Living Streets, who seek better streets for pedestrians, are combining forces with the London Cycle Campaign, who, unsurprisingly, would like pleasanter and safer conditions for people riding bikes in London. They are calling their joint campaign My Liveable London and they want boroughs to create more "low traffic neighbourhoods".

Clare Rogers tries out an Urbo bike in Palmers GreenMonday saw the arrival in Palmers Green and various other locations in Enfield borough of the first Urbo "dockless" rental bikes. Urbo bikes have been available in Waltham Forest since November.  Because Waltham Forest is a neighbouring borough to Enfield, users will now be able to make trips between the two boroughs.
