Meeting of the Pymmes Brookers

The Arnos Arms, 338 Bowes Road, N11 1AN

The Pymmes BrookERS are a group of Enfield residents working together with an aim to restore the Pymmes Brook and Salmons Brook, both tributaries of the River Lea. These rivers are all suffering from pollution, mainly from misconnected plumbing, sewage overflows and pollutants from roads.

With the help of Thames21, they are using environmental modelling software to map areas where wetlands and other greening initiatives can help trap pollution before it enters these rivers, and also reduce flooding. The group has identified 18 new spaces, which if installed, would radically transform the health of the Pymmes and Salmon’s Brooks.

The group is always happy to welcome new members so that both rivers become, in their words ‘cleaner, wilder and more fun!’

Their next meeting is on January 17th at 6.30 pm  at the Arnos Arms next to Arnos Grove Station, address 338 Bowes Rd, Arnos Grove, London N11 1AN.  Everyone welcome to come along and find out more.

St Harmonica's Blues Club: The Disclaimers Burns Night Special

The Southgate Club, 17 Chase Side, N14 5BP

Repeating event (weekly). Later occurrences are not shown in this list.

201901 disclaimers

What a terrific opening night last week! The Blues Chapter were on great form, as was Mad Dog Dave Barnes, and we were overwhelmed by the support shown by all of you who turned up. The Southgate Club were just as delighted and have promised to get more staff in this week so the bar runs efficiently. It is great to be able to see and hear the acts from anywhere in the room. Long may it continue.

This Friday sees an equally entertaining evening as Big Alan Craig brings his his Anglo/Aberdonian band The Disclaimers to celebrate Burns Night (slightly early) with their eclectic selection of blues, souls.country and rock. Julia Gannon’s vocals are supported by Graham Hall on vocals and guitar, Simon Fowle on bass and Les Cole on drums while Big Alan Craig provides guitar, mandolin, harmonica, vocals and the best address to the haggis that you have ever heard. This has always been one of our most popular evenings and with a small taster of haggis, neaps and tatties (small mind, make sure you eat before coming), courtesy of Penny, available during the evening it’ll give you something to wash down with your single malt; and you won’t have to walk five hundred miles to celebrate either!

A great evening in prospect with the usual St Harmonica’s format of free admission (with your annual £5.00 membership card) and if you like what you see and hear then your donation into the hat is how the all top drawer acts that we book get paid.

Doors open at 8.00pm (not until 8.00pm as we need to set up and sound check) and performance is at 9.00pm.

See you there…. och aye!

St Harmonica's at the Southgate Club

St Harmonica's will be at the Southgate Club on Fridays - apart from the first Friday of the month. Instead of the first Friday of the month, St Harmonica's will be at the Southgate Club on the Sunday after the first Friday (which in some months will be the second Sunday of the month).

We’ve spent a bit of time up at the new venue and we hope that you will all like the place and feel at home straight away. To allay one or two concerns that came our way; there is loads of seating, around 120 seats around tables with good sightlines and acoustics, and there is a very well stocked bar with pumped beer, a few varieties, available in the members bar which St Harmonica’s members will be able to use on blues nights.

We are able to keep the conditions the same: purchase an annual membership card for just £5 (cheapest membership anywhere?) and thereafter admission is free on Friday blues nights and Sunday blues jams. As we’ve always done, we will take ‘the hat’ around for donations, which is how the bands get paid. The Southgate Club will take the bar takings, which is how they are able to give us the venue at no cost. We’re delighted to be able to keep St Harmonica’s as a community club and hope to bring you the best in blues throughout 2019 and into the next decade.

So you know where your membership fee goes, we’ve had to buy some new PA equipment this year and get a mixer repaired, which cost us over £1k, and we need a reserve to top up the bands’ fees when the evening’s hat doesn’t quite make it.

Doors open at 8.00pm, the entrance is at the back in Crown Lane, and 2019 membership cards will be available on the door. Parking is fine after 6.30 in local streets and there is always 3 hour free parking in the Asda car park, public transport is a doddle!

Coming up in the next few weeks

Dates shown in red are Sunday night jam sessions.  Others are Friday nights.  There is no St Harmonica's on the first Friday of the month, when the Comedy Club is held in the hall.

July 4th, 1990. England are playing Germany in the Semi final of the World Cup. In Majorca, Bill and Monica are on holiday trying to rekindle their marriage. Monica dreams of an affair with Gary Lineker. But as the game begins, the couple, in the company of Bill’s colleagues Dan and Ian, along with Birgitta, a German tourist rep, settle down to watch the game on TV. Through ninety minutes, extra time and the infamous penalty shoot out, the field of battle switches between the hotel and the Italian football pitch as Monica, Bill and the England team approach the inevitable.

Talk: Walking in London

Jubilee Hall, 2 Parsonage Lane, Enfield, EN2 0AJ

logo

An illustrated talk by Peter Aylmer. London is a great place for walkers, if you know where to look—and if you know what to look for, once you get there. Peter’s guidebook Walking in London, published by Cicerone Press, deliberately seeks out some of the 13,000 species that inhabit its parks and gardens, rivers and heaths—the London Wildlife Trust helped Peter put the guide together. But that diversity couldn’t be possible without a wide range of open spaces, and Peter will also tell of how Londoners created arguably the greenest large city on the planet, often in the face of opposition from the powerful.

Peter is chair of the London group of the Long Distance Walkers Association. He brings a wide variety of perspectives and comparisons to walking in London, having walked most of England’s National Trails and created his own walks from south to north of each of Wales, England and Scotland. He is also the author of the Cicerone guide Walking in Essex. Joint talk with EHHS

A regular programme of talks is arranged by the Enfield Society. These are free to members and non-members are welcome to attend for a modest charge (typically £1 per meeting). Refreshments will be available and our sales counter will be open. Jubilee Hall, 2 Parsonage Lane, is near the junction with Chase Side and there is an access ramp for wheelchairs.

For details of future talks and walks visit enfieldsociety.org.uk/calendar
